Scotland's return to the World Cup will never fade from the memory of Kevin McCarra

Currently, the Scottish national team is going through a rather barren spell when it comes to tournament appearances; we haven't been to one since 1998. It wasn't always this way though. We actually used to be rather good if you'd believe it. We scored against the Dutch and everything. The Guardian's Football Correspondent Kevin McCarra was there when the beginning of a particularly strong and extended period of Scottish presence at World Cups was secured against Czechoslovakia in 1973.
