Alan Hansen

Footballers' post

My most outstanding memory would be the first time I went to see Scotland play. It was against Austria and I must have been eight or nine.

It was under the floodlights and I remember coming to the ground and getting to the top of the terracing and it was the first time I had been under floodlights – it was sensational.

I was playing a lot as a kid and I was used to playing on public parks. To go to a stadium that was full, under floodlights and the atmosphere at Hampden – at that time there was 134,000 in there – it was just extra special. You were tingling. It was like a shock, I really didn’t expect it be like that.

I went with the school, our history teacher had been a professional footballer. He took the school teams from 11 to 18. He took us to the Scotland games.

I thought to myself then that if I ever play once for my country then that would be the ultimate.

Alan Hansen was speaking at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews. Thanks to the event organisers for allowing Football Memories to tag along.
